Hi! I'm MarySam Gray, LPCA

I’m passionate about art and painting, and I have a dog named Moose, named after my favorite animal. I’ve also developed a love for collecting gnomes and building LEGO sets. When it comes to self-care, I enjoy skincare, creating art, listening to audiobooks or podcasts, spending time with friends, family, and Moose. I also love cooking and savoring a good cup of coffee. I believe in sprinkling self-care throughout the day, rather than waiting for stressful moments. One of my favorite quotes is by Brene Brown: "Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we are supposed to be and embracing who we are." -MarySam

MarySam's Purpose Statement: Unveiling Her "Why" as a Therapist

My interest in therapy and clientele population started with seeing how often children are not heard and sometimes not even seen. My love of wanting to connect and support children continued while working with children and teens with trauma backgrounds, fostercare and adoption. I believe so much of what we learn and experience is shaped through how our childhood years are perceived. I desire to help children and teens to grow into resilient, successful adults who hopefully will not have as many difficulties because of learning coping and social skills early in life.  -MarySam Gray, LPCA

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at my Experience as a Therapist

I often will use art therapy exercises alongside Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with clients if that is of interest to them. I love using these hands-on activities because it can be very good way of expressing emotion and externalizing it. I love art so it is fun for me to see what clients come up with and how they choose to do the exercise (color choice, technique, creativity). Some ways I enjoy using art exercises are in establishing rapport, developing goals, identifying emotions, strengths, and perspectives.

A Memorable Success Story

One success story I had with a teenage client was a breakthrough in her relationship with her mom. My teenage client was adopted and had issues relating to her adoptive family, she was going through a lot of identity and anxiety around that. She ran away and we had a session with her and mom to discuss it. During that session I was able to mediate their conversation and help pull out honest dialogue from each which they couldn't do before. It is my understand that, that session provided huge insight for both mom and daughter, helped their relationship to grow, and allowed daughter to feel more accepted because she was seen and heard. -MarySam

Maintaining Balance: How I Prioritize Well-Being to Serve Clients, Myself, and My Family

Work-life balance is being intentional and in the moment. When I am home, I try to focus on home life especially weekends and evenings. I no longer allow work email on my phone to provide some separation for when I am not at work. To do the best for clients, it requires that intentional presence to know I am all there for them.
