A Behind-the-Scenes Look at my Experience as a Therapist
When I’m not in my therapy office, you might find me embracing my adventurous side as a senior red belt in taekwondo. This martial art has taught me the value of discipline and perseverance, qualities that I bring into my work as a therapist.
I’m also an avid nature enthusiast—whether I’m camping under the stars, kayaking on a serene lake, or hiking through vibrant fall foliage, I find that these outdoor adventures recharge my spirit and inspire a sense of calm and resilience. Speaking of fall, it’s my favorite season! There’s nothing like crisp air, colorful leaves, and cozy sweaters to make me feel truly alive.
And let’s not forget my quirky passion for shoes! I love exploring new styles and finding the perfect pair to match my mood. Whether it’s for a hiking trail or a casual day out, I believe that the right shoes can set the tone for an adventure.
These aspects of my life not only keep me grounded and energized but also bring a sense of balance and joy that I believe is essential in both personal and professional realms. I look forward to sharing more about these interests and how they shape my approach to therapy with those I work with! Â

A Memorable Success Story
Here’s a narrative about a success story involving a client who was inspired to pursue a career in therapy:
One of the most rewarding moments in my career as a therapist came from a heartfelt thank-you letter I received from a client during her time in substance use treatment. When she first came to see me, she was grappling with the challenges of addiction and feeling uncertain about her future. Through our sessions, we worked together on her recovery, self-esteem, and finding purpose in her life.
Her journey was not easy, but she displayed remarkable resilience and commitment. As we progressed, she began to open up about her passion for helping others, a passion that had been ignited by our sessions. She expressed that our work together had given her a new perspective and a sense of hope she hadn’t felt in a long time.
In her letter, she shared that my approach and the support I provided had deeply inspired her. She wrote about how she had always admired the way therapy helped her understand herself better and navigate her recovery. This inspiration led her to make a significant decision: she wanted to go back to school and become a therapist herself.
Reading her letter, I was deeply moved. It was incredibly fulfilling to know that the work we did together had not only contributed to her recovery but also sparked a passion in her to help others in the same way. Her decision to pursue a career in therapy was a testament to her strength and the impact that meaningful support and guidance can have.
This experience reinforced my belief in the power of therapy and the ripple effect it can create. It reminded me why I chose this profession—to make a difference in people’s lives and, in turn, inspire them to make a positive impact on others. Hearing my client's desire to embark on her journey to becoming a therapist was one of the most gratifying moments of my career, and it continues to motivate me every day. -Wilma
Maintaining Balance: How I Prioritize Well-Being to Serve Clients, Myself, and My Family
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for me to show up as my best self for my clients. I recognize that being a therapist requires me to be fully present and emotionally available, so taking care of my own mental and physical well-being is a top priority.
One of the cornerstones of my personal self-care routine is my involvement in my church community. Attending services and participating in church activities provides me with a sense of connection, spiritual grounding, and support that helps me navigate life’s challenges with a positive outlook.
Exercise is another crucial part of my routine. Whether it’s a vigorous workout or a peaceful walk, staying active helps me manage stress and maintain physical health. I’ve found that regular exercise not only boosts my energy levels but also enhances my focus and overall mood, allowing me to approach my work with renewed vigor.
Supporting my children in their sports activities is also a vital aspect of my life. Being actively involved in their games and practices not only strengthens our family bond but also brings me joy and a sense of fulfillment. Watching them grow and excel in their interests reminds me of the importance of balance and the value of pursuing passions outside of work.
By integrating these practices into my life, I ensure that I am balanced and resilient. This holistic approach to self-care allows me to bring my best self to each session, providing my clients with the attention, empathy, and support they deserve. Maintaining this balance is essential for both my well-being and my ability to effectively support those I work with. -Wilma, CSW
