Dr. Tammy Totten, a Glasser Scholar, has studied extensively with world-renowned Reality Therapy trainer/developer Dr. Bob Wubbulding Glasser Scholar and is Choice Theory / Reality Therapy, Certified. She is passionate about incorporating reality therapy into her clinical work, her teaching, and, of, course in her own life! She believes that we always have choices, even when we think we don't!
She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (KY), a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (TX). She has been in clinical practice for 28 years, and has worked as a substance abuse counselor, a clinical director of a residential children's facility, a counselor in a university counseling center, a Clinical Mental Health Consultant at Job Corps, and as a supervisor for a clinical mental health team working with psychotic disorders. She has been in private practice with Alliance Counseling Associates since 2016.
Dr. Totten works with teenagers and adults. She sees clients in the Alliance Counseling Associates office and can see clients who live anywhere in KY online.
Dr. Totten is a contributing faculty member for two universities. She has taught a spectrum of students from undergraduate to doctoral students. She has been a professor for 14 years, and enjoys bringing humor and music into her classrooms, clinical practice, and presentations. Her research interests include trauma and disaster response (she is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional), music and the brain, and incorporating music into therapy with a reality therapy theoretical orientation.
She serves on the Editorial Board of The Family Journal and is a member of the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam Committee (NCMHCE) with the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). She is also a Board Member for Phoenix Rising, Inc., a non-profit organization striving to connect children who are survivors of human trafficking or exploitation with safety and resources and educating the community about domestic sex trafficking.
She has also been active in the American Red Cross as a Disaster Mental Health responder for 20 years and has been on many disaster deployments.
Dr. Totten is also a consultant with a private national company that represents employee assistance programs, and has responded to a few bank robberies, critical factory accidents, suicides, and on-site employee death.
