Hi! I'm Brenna Saunders, MFT

I enjoy narrative therapy and solution focused because I want all my clients to share their Truths. Narrative helps the clients separate themselves from the problem and externalize it, rather than internalize it. I believe people get stuck and feel trapped in problems, but with professional guidance have the skills and sense of purpose to guide them through difficult times. This technique empowers a client's ability to know what's best for them, but with problem language and narrow lenses they can get stuck in being able to see other avenues and approaches. Together, I want to help my client unravel this knot of relationships to help understand themselves and others when approaching their current problems. -Brenna

Brenna's Purpose Statement: Unveiling Her "Why" as a Therapist

I decided I wanted to be a therapist the day I left for boot camp in August 2017 at 19 years old. The passion was right in front of me, but I didn't realize I could make a career out of it until then. Mental health is a personal journey for me. Unfortunately, I grew up in an abusive environment that made me grow up quickly, however, I never lost sight of having fun and staying hopeful. Due to this, I was always able to connect on deep, meaningful levels with others no matter the different paths of life we may have walked. I've always been curious to understand humans, learn their story, and connect with them. Everyone has a story and I think everyone should be able to share their story in a safe, respectful, non-biased environment.

A Memorable Success Story

I had a client that disassociated a lot, and was fearful of how numb she felt to everything. I helped this client by giving her the space to share her truth with me. Her disassociation was a protective, defense mechanism from the many traumas she endured in life. She was afraid to feel things because she thought it made her weak from previous abuse. Together, we unpacked hard truths in her story. Allowing her to finally share those events and process them. This opened up space for her to be more present in reality. Although, it was tough she was able to experience more good by feeling the bad. We re-framed her disassociation as a way of her body helping her by protecting her or letting her know when it's time for an emotional break. I empowered my client by encouraging her to have the autonomy over who she decides to take with her in her "disassociation bubble" or when she pops that bubble. Of course, healing from such trauma is a slow, thoughtful process that has no time stamp. And one size doesn't fit all. Sometimes, when it comes to how our bodies react to trauma, clients can feel "crazy, broken, damaged, numb." Helping them reconnect with their bodies and show themselves grace for surviving this long is crucial in the healing journey. -Brenna

Maintaining Balance: How I Prioritize Well-Being to Serve Clients, Myself, and My Family

I prioritize my well-being by attending therapy, meditating, and spending quality time in nature. I keep things light-hearted with a goofy side, often breaking into dance and song spontaneously. Balancing these aspects of my life helps me stay grounded and present for my clients, myself, and my family. -Brenna Saunders, MFT
