What is a Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program?
A mental health therapeutic rehabilitation program (TRP) is an intensive skill-building service that focuses on social, personal, emotional, crisis, coping and daily living skills. We strive to reduce the impact of mental health challenges that children and adolescents are facing so they can function at their best possible level within their own home, school, and community settings. At Alliance Counseling, we operate our therapeutic rehabilitation program in a group setting with a maximum number of 12 participants per group.
We use a variety of techniques that help our clients learn the skills they need to be successful in various aspects of their lives: friendships, peer interactions, family, academics, vocation, social interactions, self-esteem, and more. Through the skill-building and psychoeducational interventions that we use, our clients gain insight and education that helps them think and change behaviors in order to focus on goals that help them build brighter futures.
Our program is individualized and each client identifies a goal they want to achieve. Having a person-centered plan of care makes the outcome of these recovery services more successful. It’s important to remember that children and adolescents need to feel heard, valued and that what they want matters. Through developing a person-centered plan of care, we help them feel understood, which creates an environment for them to become invested in the process of recovery.
Our Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program is called RISE, which stands for Resilience, Individuality, Skill-Building and Education. We help the most vulnerable children and adolescents RISE to their potential and feel a sense of confidence in who they are and what they bring to the world.
What Topics or Activities are Provided?
We focus on keeping our clients engaged and learning new skills depending upon their needs. Each week, the topics of the program could include:
- Art Therapy
- Mindfulness & Meditation for Attention
- Understanding Symptoms of Mental Illness & Identifying Triggers
- Emotion Regulation & Coping with Depression and Anxiety
- Music & Cognitive-Behavioral Skills
- Social Skills / Peer Relationships
- Self-Esteem & Empowerment
- Crisis Coping & Anger Management
- Skills for Activities of Daily Living
- Life-skills – Hygiene, Nutrition/Preparing Meals, Budgeting
How is a Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program different than Individual or Group Therapy?
This program is intensive and focuses on skill-building interventions for children and adolescents who don’t require 24-hour per-day care, but who need more than outpatient therapy. Our therapists focus on the topics listed above but use skill-building interventions such as teaching, cueing, reminding, training and modeling to help our clients overcome /barriers. We use step-by-step physical, verbal, written and visual directions/demonstrations that enable our participants to implement the skills independently.
Who Qualifies for Participation in our RISE Program?
A child or adolescent who has a severe emotional disability that has significant areas of impairment in daily functioning. Our clients often need skill-building, recovery-based interventions because they are at risk of needing a higher level of care such as an inpatient hospitalization, foster care, a residential or group home setting, etc. The purpose of a therapeutic rehabilitation program is to not only help children and adolescents avoid additional trauma by placement outside their home but to also be successful in their current homes, schools and communities because they’ve gained the skills they need to live with their mental health challenges.
We do what is called a functional assessment to help determine if this service is medically necessary prior to any client beginning the program.
The child or adolescent must also have Medicaid, as they are currently the only participating payer source for therapeutic rehabilitation.
* It is important to note that if a child or adolescent is engaging in behaviors that are an immediate danger to themselves or others, experiencing active psychosis or other symptoms/behavior that could be dangerous, they are not appropriate for this program. Although a therapeutic rehabilitation program is an intensive service, and our participants may have many needs, it is not a crisis service.
What are the Ages of the Child and Adolescent Groups?
The children are ages 8-11 and the adolescents are ages 12-17.
*Participants ages 11 and 12 may be in the older or younger group depending upon developmental needs and level of maturity.
Are Meals Provided?
Yes! We provide either lunch or dinner during the program hours for all participants. We also incorporate skill-building around meal planning, cooking, cleaning, preparing food, nutrition and more.
